Google Ads vs. Facebook Ads: Which Is Better for Your Business?
Should your business invest in Google Ads or Facebook Ads? Learn the differences between search and social advertising to determine which platform fits your goals.
If you’re planning to invest in digital advertising, one of the first questions you’ll face is where to spend your budget. Should you advertise on Google? Or would Facebook and Instagram deliver better results?
The answer isn’t as simple as declaring one platform “better” than the other. Google Ads and Meta Ads were built for different purposes, and understanding how each platform works can help you invest your marketing dollars more effectively.
The Biggest Difference
The easiest way to think about it is this:
Google Ads captures demand. Facebook and Instagram Ads create demand. That distinction changes everything.
When someone searches Google for “roof repair near me” or “personal injury attorney in Dallas,” they’re actively looking for a solution. They already know they need help. Yet, when someone is scrolling through Facebook or Instagram, they’re usually not looking for your business. Your advertisement interrupts their experience and encourages them to learn more.
Neither approach is wrong—they simply reach customers at different stages of the buying process.
When Google Ads Makes Sense
Google Ads is often the strongest choice when customers already know what they’re looking for.
It’s especially effective for businesses such as:
- Home service companies
- Attorneys
- Healthcare providers
- Professional service firms
- Local businesses
- Emergency services
These businesses benefit because customers are actively searching for their services and are often ready to contact someone immediately.
Google Ads can help generate:
- Phone calls
- Contact form submissions
- Appointment requests
- Online purchases
- Qualified leads
For businesses with high purchase intent, Google Ads is often the fastest way to begin generating new opportunities.
When Facebook & Instagram Ads Make Sense
Meta’s advertising platforms excel at introducing your business to people who may not have been actively searching for you.
They’re especially valuable for:
- Restaurants
- Fitness businesses
- Med spas
- Retail stores
- Ecommerce brands
- Events
- Lifestyle businesses
- Businesses with strong visual branding
These campaigns help build awareness, generate interest, and encourage prospective customers to engage with your business before they begin searching elsewhere.
They’re also excellent for promoting:
- Special offers
- New products
- Seasonal campaigns
- Events
- Memberships
- Community engagement
Which Platform Costs Less?
There’s no universal answer.
Advertising costs vary based on:
- Your industry
- Your competition
- Your location
- Your audience
- Your campaign objectives
Some industries see lower costs on Meta, while highly competitive local service businesses often generate better returns through Google despite higher click costs.
The important question isn’t “Which platform is cheaper?”, but “Which platform generates the best return for my business?”
What About Ecommerce?
For ecommerce businesses, the answer is often both.
Google Ads helps capture shoppers who are actively searching for specific products.
Facebook and Instagram help introduce products to new audiences, recover abandoned visitors through remarketing, and encourage repeat purchases.
Together, they create a stronger customer journey than either platform can achieve alone.
Can They Work Together?
Absolutely.
In fact, many of the most successful campaigns combine both platforms.
Imagine a homeowner searching Google for “window replacement.” They visit your website but don’t request a quote. Later that evening, they’re scrolling through Facebook and see your business again—this time featuring customer testimonials, before-and-after photos, or a limited-time promotion. That second interaction often provides the confidence they need to reach out. This is why combining search and social advertising can be so effective.
Which Platform Do I Recommend?
It depends on your business.
If customers are already searching for your services, I usually recommend starting with Google Ads because it captures people with immediate intent. However, if your business relies on visual storytelling, community engagement, or building awareness before someone is ready to buy, Facebook and Instagram often become a valuable addition. Many of my clients eventually use both platforms because they complement one another rather than compete.
Start with Your Customers—Not the Platform
The best advertising strategy isn’t determined by what’s popular—it’s determined by how your customers make buying decisions. Understanding where they spend their time, when they begin researching, and what motivates them to take action allows you to invest your advertising budget where it can have the greatest impact.
If you’re unsure whether Google Ads, Facebook Ads, or a combination of both is the right fit for your business, I’d be happy to help you build a strategy based on your goals—not someone else’s marketing playbook.
